Me on solo and compin' in background using double recording. I merged all tracks into one wave file and then converted to Read Audio format. 02/04/98. |
I'm playin' the guitar solo part on this one and using a rhythm section generated by Band in a Box from the chord symbols I input via computer keyboard. 12/28/97. |

For those who are not familiar with what you can do with Band in a Box, you simply input the chords to a song using the keyboard and you have bass, drums and piano ( or any other chording instrument you desire) as a rhythm section. The melody line can be input using either a midi piano or pointing and clicking on a staff line. You can then select a style in which you wish the song played. And finally, select from many different top musicians you would like to see take a solo. Most of these midi files were created using Band in a Box with the soloist feature and style as indicated.
For the benefit of those BiaB and PTAudio nuts who are
interested in the way I did this...
First off, I'm using a Pentium 120 with a SoundBlaster Awe64 card and a Roland SC88vl Sound Canvas.
First thing I did was to convert the BiaB format of the song into a midi file and sent it to my PowerTracksAudio directory.
Load it in to PTAudio and get ready for the fun.
Next, I set my midi devices to input of Roland Serial Midi Input and output to Creative midi instr. map.
Now ready to convert the midi output into a wave file. I allowed all tracks (Piano, bass and drums) to play
with a blank audio track highlighted for recording. Next step is to take the 'output' jack of the SBAwe64 card
and using a short jumper cable plug the other end into the 'input' jack of the SBAwe64.
I've also found that I can take the output of my SC88 routed thru a small $39 Radio Shack amp and using
the earphone jack route that into the SBAwe64 card. This way I can get the benefit of the SC88 sounds. In
this instance I've set the midi devices in PTA to Roland Serial Midi Input AND output.
Press record and let 'er rip. You should now have the entire rhytmn section in one audio file.
I next plugged in my guitar (with a jack adapter) into the 'input' of the SBAwe64 and recorded onto a
new audio track. The only problem here is that you can't really hear yourself amplified as you play.
In any event, go ahead and play your part.
Alternately, I've tried using my little $9 Radio Shack mic and setting it in front of my guitar amp and that
seems to work fine also. Of course, there will be some outside noise since I'm not it a studio, just my living room.
However, I can control the tone on the amp and get a more mellow sound this way.
Finally, highlight both tracks from beginning to ending and merge the two files into one wave output.
It works for me and if anybody has any suggestions as to another way to do this give me a buzz via email.
More to come as I get the time.
